Vision

I'm not totally blind, but actually "low vision" or "legal blind". Legal blindess is defined when you have 10% (20/200) or less of normal vision in one or both eyes (on my case, 20/200 for RE and 20/600 for LE).

The famouse eyesight test is called the "Snellen chart". It measures how far you can see compared to the "perfect vision" reference (which is 20/20). The 20/20 line (or 100%) says that someone here can see this line at 20ft (6m), while the 20/200 line (or 10%) says that someone that is at 100% (perfect vision) can see this line at 200ft (60m).

This can be scaled up and down to your reference. So someone with 20/200 vision (like myself) has to be at 2ft (0.6m) to see something that someone with 20/20 vision could see at 20ft (6m).

This is my mobility cane from Ambutech. If you see someone with this white cane with a green bottom stripe, it's almost surely me.

It has this rolling ball tip, which rolls on the surfaces to identify obstacles and other irregularities on the ground. (but it can get stuck often on larger holes or irregular terrain, like stone roads, soft ground or just bad conserved sidewalks).

But it mainly works as identification, to let other people know I'm disabled and might need help, as well as acessing preferential lines.

How I watch anime

(From Meitantei Precure 32 - 04:35)

I modified my mpv media player with subtitle options to make it easier for me to read:

  • Sub scale 1.4 (40% larger)
  • Sub vertical margin 300 (closer to the center of the screen, so I don't have to look too much down)
  • Sub background for better contrast (black, 40% opacity)

How I code

(From Visual Studio Code, screen with 200% zoom)

I mainly use the system magnifier (native on Windows and most Linux distributions) for almost all tasks that involve reading. It can zoom as much as needed, and it's my lifesaver for everyday work.

I don't use screen readers very often, as my level of visual impairment is still manageable with just zoom. I do use a browser extension for screen reading, that is very useful with longer texts that would take a long time to read with high zoom.
